Petalite’s mineral composition is a lithium aluminum silicate with the chemical formula LiAlSi₄O₁₀, meaning it’s rich in lithium, aluminum, and silicon dioxide, making it a valuable lithium source for ceramics, glass (due to low expansion), and the battery industry. It’s a tectosilicate, structurally related to feldspars, and found in lithium-bearing pegmatites alongside minerals like spodumene and lepidolite
Occurrence & Properties:
- Group: Tectosilicate (a framework silicate).
- Structure: Monoclinic crystal system.
- Cleavage: Perfect basal cleavage, giving it a leaf-like (petalon) appearance, hence the name.
Applications:
- Lithium-ion battery production
- Electric vehicle (EV) battery systems
- Renewable energy storage systems
- Glass and ceramics industries
- Metallurgical applications
